SARS expert warns of possible new outbreak

Dangers of coexistence, need for better hygiene

Beijing (pte039/05.06.2003/14:46) Zhong Nashan, SARS expert and director of the Guangzhou Institute for Respiratory Illnesses, has warned of the possibility of a new outbreak of the deadly lung disease.

Based on various analyses of the development of the epidemic in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong and in Hong Kong, Zhong this the SARS epidemic in China is coming to an end. But Zhong added that SARS could easily arise again in the future when large numbers of people travel through the country, reports China Daily http://www1.chinadaily.com.cn .

In order to protect against a new outbreak, Zhong has advised the population to increase hygienic measures and improve physical fitness. He has also encouraged Chinese citizens to keep their living environments clean and avoid "bad habits", such as eating without washing one's hands and spitting on the ground. Zhong believes the SARS outbreak has made it imperative for the population of China to improve hygiene.

Zhong further cautions against eating wild animals. "Eating many different species as delicacies disturbs the ecological equilibrium, and people suffer as a consequence," said Zhong, as quoted in China Daily. Although there is yet no proof that the SARS virus was transmitted from wild animals to humans, many scientists believe this is a possibility. (newsfox-special SARS)
