Fresh infusion of art by young and emerging artists

Cologne (pts012/19.10.2004/10:00) For many years, it has been the philosophy of the ART COLOGNE (28.10. -
01.11.2004) to support young artists and up-and-coming galleries that are still awaiting their commercial breakthrough. To allow guests from abroad to pronounce the names of our sponsorship programmes, these programmes have been renamed in line with the new look of the ART COLOGNE in general. Beginning in 2004, the new galleries programme will be known as "New Contemporaries", while the young artists programme will be called "New Talents". To complement the setting, ART COLOGNE offers the Sal. Oppenheim Young Collectors' Lounge.

Since 1980, the ART COLOGNE (Koelnmesse and the Federal Association of German Galleries) has been supporting young artists by providing them with 25 m^2 booths free of charge. This year - under its new name "New Talents" - the 11 booths are again located within the booths of the galleries representing the young artists. As was the case in the past, the participants in the New Talents programme were selected by a jury put together by the Federal Association of German Galleries (BVDG). The members of the jury (Perdita von Kraft, Director of the Brandenburgische Kunstsammlungen; Matthias Winzen, Director of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden; Anita Beckers, proprietor of the Anita Beckers gallery, Frankfurt; Ulrike Schmela, proprietor of the Ulrike Schmela gallery, Düsseldorf; and sculptor Lutz Fritsch of Cologne) selected 13 candidates (seven from Germany and six from abroad, including two artist couples) from a field of 80 applicants. The candidates are: Jooyeon Park (Chosun Gallery, Seoul), Ella Ziegler (Galerie Völcker und Freunde, Berlin), Dagmar Keller/Martin Wittwer (Galerie Ulrich Fiedler, Cologne), Andreas Lutz/Anders Guggisberg (Galerie Friedrich, Basel), Alexander Wolff (Galerie Mezzanin, Vienna), Stefan Mauck (TZR Galerie für Bildende Kunst, Bochum), Tom Früchtl (Nusser&Baumgart Contemporary, Munich), Roseline Luduvico (Galerie Zink und Gegner, Munich), Julia Jansen (Galerie S 65, Aalst), Simon Pasieka (Manus Presse, Stuttgart) and Hentie van der Merwe (Galerie Gabriele Rivet, Cologne). "This year the jury once again selected a group of young talents according to very rigorous criteria," reports ART COLOGNE Director Gérard A. Goodrow. "The young artists are representative of an entire generation, one that is daring and delights in experimentation. ART COLOGNE is greatly enriched by this focus on young artists." The program is sponsored by the Federal Government Commissioner for Cultural Affairs and the Media.

In general, a maximum of 25 young galleries can be invited by ART COLOGNE as New Contemporaries and sponsored with funding from the Stadtsparkasse Köln's SK Cultural Foundation. They have moved from the ground floor and are now grouped together on the upper floor of Hall 3. Selected by the jury (ART COLOGNE Director Gérard Goodrow; Caroline Nathusius, Koelnmesse; and Bea de Souza, proprietor of the London gallery The Agency), this year's New Contemporaries are: Galerie Guido W. Baudach (Berlin), Ausstellungsraum Brotherslasher (Cologne), Sebastian Fath Contemporary (Mannheim), Fiebach + Minninger (Cologne), Galerie Vera Gliem (Cologne), Galerie Parisa Kind (Frankfurt), Christine Meyer (Munich), Jan Winkelmann (Berlin), Beijing Tokyo Art Projects (Beijing), GIMM EIS (Copenhagen), doggenfisher (Edinburgh), Ritter / Zamet (London), Alimentation Générale Nosbaum + Reding (Luxembourg), Ellen de Bruijne Projects (Amsterdam), Gabriele Senn Galerie (Vienna) and The Happy Lion (Los Angeles).

A special magnet for young collectors will be the Sal. Oppenheim Young Collectors' Lounge, that is making its debut. The artist-designed lounge is intended to attract the young generation and awaken in them an interest in collecting art. This year, the Lounge will be designed by the Frankfurt artist and professor Heiner Blum. Around the corner from the lounge, in the direct vicinity of the New Contemporaries, visitors will find a tattoo shop by the Belgian artist Wim Delvoye (Galerie Kewenig, Cologne).

With 250 dealers from 22 countries, the percentage of foreign dealers at the ART COLOGNE 2004 has risen from 40 to 45 per cent. From 28th October to 1st November, the fair is open daily from noon to 8:00 p.m. The entrance prices are as follows: Single day ticket: 12 EUR
2-Day-Ticket: 20 EUR
Evening ticket, valid from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.: 7 EUR
