Weblogs can improve business?

"Blogtalk" experts discuss communication aspect

Vienna (pte047/26.05.2003/17:00) According to German business weblog expert Martin Roell http://www.roell.net , businesses can use weblogs to improve their communication processes.

Roell recommends, however, that companies first experiment with blogging on a small scale. Roell presented his advice at what may have been the first international conference on weblogs, held in Austria last week.

The "Blogtalk" conference carried out at the Centre for New Media at the University of Krems had positive resonance among participants. "It was great," said Roell, who runs his own weblog. Not only were the presentations and individual talks inspiring, says Roell, but he can now put faces to many well-known bloggers. "It was fascinating to see whether people are the way they present themselves in the weblogs in real life," he added.

In his presentation Roell recommended a four-step process for companies who want to use weblogs to improve e-business and internal communication, starting with simple applications. "This is the right time to experiment," said Roell, pointing out that the starting costs are very low. He believes investing just a little bit now can put companies in a good position when the boom comes.

The first step involves using weblogs for knowledge management in individual projects. The next two steps would be to add smaller and then larger departments to the scheme. Finally, employees could start running their own personal weblogs. According to Roell, weblogs are more personal than conventional discussion forums and can therefore improve communication processes.
