Security Is Becoming a Key Factor for AI

OpenAI and Anthropic show that security, transparency, traceability are increasingly important

Hagenberg/Vienna (pts013/16.09.2026/11:10)

The discussion surrounding artificial intelligence is increasingly shifting from pure performance to trust, safety, and independent verifiability. Recent statements from OpenAI and Anthropic show that AI governance, safety, and independent evaluation are becoming central prerequisites for the responsible use of AI.

While OpenAI highlights the challenges surrounding AI safety and alignment as strategic success factors, Anthropic is calling for stronger external evaluation of high-performance AI systems through the concept of independent "embedded evaluators." The message is clear: trust in AI must not be based solely on the statements of its developers.

"The more responsibility we entrust to AI, the less sufficient it is for developers to issue their own certificates. Trust requires independent evidence," says Michael Weberberger, managing director of TRUSTIFAI.

From Governance to Independent Assurance

As AI becomes increasingly widespread in business-critical processes, the demands for transparency, traceability, and risk management are rising. Companies must not only define how AI may be used but also be able to demonstrate that systems actually meet the specified requirements.

AI governance creates the organizational framework, AI safety implements protective measures, and testing verifies the behavior of systems. Complementing these efforts, AI assurance is gaining importance: the independent assessment of risks, controls, and system behavior.

"Good AI governance defines the right rules. But what really matters is whether we can also demonstrate that AI systems actually adhere to these rules in practice," says Weberberger.

How TRUSTIFAI Supports Companies

As an independent specialist in trustworthy AI, TRUSTIFAI—a joint venture between TÜV AUSTRIA and the Software Competence Center Hagenberg (SCCH)—supports companies throughout the entire lifecycle of AI systems. Its service portfolio includes, among other things:

  • Independent AI assessments and audits
  • Evaluation of AI risks and safety measures
  • Validation of governance and compliance requirements
  • Robustness analyses
  • Preparation for regulatory requirements such as the EU AI Act
  • Building robust evidence for internal and external stakeholders

The goal is not only to maintain trust in AI but to make it verifiable. "Independent evaluation is increasingly evolving from a regulatory requirement into a business necessity. Companies need robust evidence of how their AI systems function, what risks exist, and how effective protective measures are. This is exactly where TRUSTIFAI comes in," explains Weberberger.

Developments at OpenAI and Anthropic show that the industry is moving toward a new understanding of trustworthy AI. As AI systems become more powerful and autonomous, independent verification of safety, robustness, and compliance continues to gain importance.

"Anyone who wants to successfully scale AI needs not only powerful technology but also robust evidence of its trustworthiness," concludes Michael Weberberger.
