Frequentis AG: FREQUENTIS and DSNA go live with new voice system at Brest Area Control Centre, France

Vienna, Austria (pta016/03.09.2026/10:01 UTC+2)

  • French DSNA and Frequentis deliver a new voice communication system to enhance air traffic safety, resilience, and coordination in western France
  • The system is now fully operational following regulatory approval, marking a key milestone in the joint modernisation programme

Frequentis and the French air navigation service provider Direction des Services de la Navigation Aérienne (DSNA) have announced the full operational status of the new voice communication system at the Brest Area Control Centre (ACC). The system supports more flexible, reliable air traffic management across France and Europe.

Following its initial go-live under conditional status in October 2023, the system received formal approval from the French Civil Aviation Authority (Direction Générale de l'Aviation Civile) in April 2025. It replaces the legacy ARTEMIS system – originally supplied by Frequentis and CS Group – which had been in use for nearly 30 years.

The project is part of the Functional Airspace Block Europe Central (FABEC) voice communication system programme, developed in cooperation with EUROCONTROL's Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre (MUAC). Frequentis supplied its VCS3020X system, tailored to meet DSNA's requirements.

"The successful commissioning of the voice communication system at ACC Brest demonstrates the strength of our partnership with DSNA and our commitment to dependable, safety-critical solutions," says Reinhard Grimm, Executive Vice President ATM at Frequentis.

For DSNA, the system offers improved communication continuity and a robust and resilient communication solution, supporting airspace management during varying traffic conditions.

Brest is the second centre to go live under this programme, following Maastricht in the Netherlands. Frequentis and DSNA have a long-standing partnership spanning more than two decades, with joint efforts including the nationwide modernisation of voice communication systems for control centres and aviation message handling upgrades in overseas territories. This ongoing collaboration reflects a shared commitment to operational resilience and innovation in air traffic management.
