- 15,000th Air‑to‑Ground Protocol Converter (APC) produced for the FAA's Brand-New Air Traffic Control System (BNATCS)
- Milestone supports the world's largest aviation communications modernization program, spanning thousands of network endpoints across the U.S. National Airspace System
- The APC gateways enable large‑scale TDM‑to‑VoIP conversion across the FAA's BNATCS program
Frequentis has completed production of the 15,000th Air-to-Ground Protocol Converter (APC) for the DOT's Brand-New Air Traffic Control System (BNATCS) modernization program. The APC enables FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) to safely migrate radios and Voice communication system (VCS) to modern IP-based systems.
Frequentis USA was awarded the APC contract in 2024 as part of Phase One of the FAA's Voice over IP Communication Enterprise (VoICE) Program. VoICE is a modernization effort to replace aging air traffic control voice systems with advanced, networked Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technologies, improving safety, reliability, and operational flexibility across the National Airspace System. The program scope includes both APC deployments and subsequent voice switch deliveries.
The production of 15,000 APC units represents a major milestone of the FAA's VoICE program.
Frequentis relied on their decade long partner ComSonics, Inc. – a Virginia-based company specializing in fully automated electronic manufacturing – to produce the APC units in the accelerated timeline. The existing partnership with ComSonics to manufacture electronics components for critical FAA systems in the USA was a critical success factor.
In the next phase of the program, Frequentis will begin delivering its latest voice communication system, the Frequentis X10 VoICE. The company is currently building the first 63 X10 systems, with deliveries scheduled to be completed in early 2027.
"Frequentis is proud to support the DOT's BNATCS program," said Dieter Eier, President of Frequentis USA. "Our team moved mountains to accelerate delivery of the 15,000 APC systems, from the original eight‑year rollout plan to just 12 months, helping the FAA modernize air traffic control communications at unprecedented speed."
