SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES Signs Memorandum of Understanding for Delivery of Production Machines for CdTe Thin-Film Solar Modules

Kahl am Main, June 04, 2021 - During the course of the solar trade fair SNEC in Shanghai, SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES today signed a landmark memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the China National Building Materials (CNBM) Group, Beijing. The goal is the expansion of the existing, successful and long-time cooperation for the development and supply of production machines for the CdTe (cadmium telluride) thin-film solar technology.

The MoU includes production machines for the key manufacturing steps for the coating and thermal treatment of solar modules. In addition to its project with regards to the CIGS (copper, indium, gallium and selenium or phosphor)  technology, the customers intends to set up additional, new production sites for the manufacturing of CdTe thin-film solar module in various regions in China. The MoU covers the mutual understanding of CNBM and SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES with respect to the cooperation of the delivery and the set-up of production machines for the new sites in China. CNBM targets an annual output of CdTe solar modules at the sites in a gigawatt range. After the signing of the MoU, SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES will work together with CNBM on the details of the legally-binding delivery contracts for the first batch of deliverable production machines.

Dr.-Ing. Stefan Rinck, CEO of SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES AG, comments: "We were already able to conclude a development agreement with CNBM to develop the key production machines for state-of-the-art technology in the CdTe thin-film area." Dr. Rinck continues: "Our customer CNBM invests in factories for the production based on both the CIGS and the CdTe technology. We are very pleased that we are now an important partner for the set-up of factories for the manufacturing of CdTe solar modules".

Background CIGS/CdTe thin-film solar technology

For thin-film solar technology, a large glass pane constitutes the base material, on which a relatively thin layer of 1 to 2 µm of a photoactive layer is applied. The coating includes alloys consisting of copper, indium, gallium and selenium or phosphor (CIGS) or compounds made of cadmium and tellurium (CdTe). Due to their superior performance at low light intensities, the thin-film solar cells can already generate electric energy in the early morning and late evening or during times of overcast skies. Moreover, these modules are not as heat-sensitive and more tolerant with respect to local shading. Furthermore, due to their homogeneous surface color and appealing appearance, the thin-film solar modules can be used as architectural design elements for the façade or for the roofs of buildings.
