WLAN 802.11g standard becomes official
Higher speed and improved compatibility
Piscataway (pte028/13.06.2003/14:48) The IEEE committee has officially approved the new 802.11g standard for WLAN. This will lift the theoretical data transfer capacity of WLAN from 11 Mbps (802.11b) to 54 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz field.
Up to now such data transfer rates were only possible with the 802.11a standard for WLAN, which is located in the 5 GHz field and not compatible with the 802.11b standard http://standards.ieee.org/announcements/80211gfinal.html . But as the new 802.11g standard is compatible, older devices can now coexist in the same network.
The introduction of 802.11g had been delayed repeatedly. According to Stuart Kerry, the director of the IEEE working group, this was because over 400 developers had been working on the formulation of the new standard. The Wi-Fi Alliance has said it will soon begin certifying products for the new standard.
