New raw materials and conversion methods for biofuel production

Berlin (pts009/06.12.2012/09:15) The participants of the 10th Conference on Biofuels "Fuels of the Future" will meet at Berlin's International Congress Centre (ICC) on 21 and 22 January 2013. More than 500 attendees are again expected from Germany, Europe and abroad.

An expansion of the raw material basis and new biofuel conversion pathways are set to become indispensable. For this, however, the funding and political framework conditions in the area of advanced biofuels must be upgraded and adjusted. Biofuels have grown into a significant factor contributing to lowering GHG emissions and to diversifying the energy supply in the transportation sector. Biofuels can be produced on a socially and environmentally responsible basis and efficiently utilized.

The challenges resulting for research and development are not only manifold but also highly complex. In 2008, the European Commission had already reacted by launching a series of initiatives, including the "European Industrial Bioenergy Initiative". Among other things, the European Industrial Bioenergy Initiative has the objective of accelerating research and innovation in sustainable biofuel technologies. During the 10th International BBE/UFOP specialist conference, Mr. Bruno Schmitz, Head of Unit, New and Renewable Energy Sources, DG for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, will identify concrete objectives and give an overview of projects and funding instruments in the biofuel production segment in Europe.

During the conference, a range of other highly topical and future-oriented projects from the area of biofuel production based on new raw materials as well as on common raw materials using new conversion pathways will be addressed. The panel of speakers and their topics include:
