Judge issues restraining order on Google employee

Ex-Microsoft worker could divulge secrets

Washington (pte044/29.07.2005/15:58) Former Microsoft executive Kai-Fu Lee, who was hired by Google http://www.google.com , has been barred from working on search technologies, business strategies, planning or development related to the computer search market in China, as well as any other areas he worked in while employed at Microsoft.

Superior Court Judge Steven Gonzalez issued the order after Microsoft requested the temporary restraining order that prevents Lee from violating his non-compete agreement.

The computer giant sued Lee on the same day that Google announced its new recruit. Microsoft claims that their former employee was breaking his one-year non-compete agreement.

Lee was a vice president at Microsoft and played an important role in its China operations. According to Microsoft's lawsuit, he also led the development of some of its search technologies.

The restraining order remains in effect until 6th September, when there will be a preliminary injunction, which would bar Lee from doing similar work at Google as he did at Microsoft.

Google and Lee maintain that Microsoft is trying to frighten off other company workers of 'jumping ship' to Google. The two companies are increasingly involved in competitive behaviour both personally and business-wise as they compete in Internet search and new services.
