Phelps wins 2nd of 8 possible gold medals

Montreal (pte043/27.07.2005/16:13) Michael Phelps, who had planned to take eight gold medals home from Montreal http://www.montreal2005.org/eng/ , won his second yesterday in the men's 200 metres freestyle in one minute 45.20 seconds.

Phelps, who surprisingly missed out on qualifying for the 400 metre freestyle finals, won his first gold in the men's 4x100 metre relay on Sunday.

"Everything here has been a big learning experience for me," Phelps said.

"Everything that's happened hopefully will help me on the road to Beijing."

Australian Grant Hackett, who won the 400m title, took silver in the 200 metre in 1:46.14 ahead of South African Ryk Neethling, 1:46.63.

"You can't take away from his (Phelps's) performance," Hackett said. "He's a class act and it's good to see Michael back on top again."

Kirsty Coventry, Zimbabwe, won her country's first world title with a surprising swim in the women's 100m backstroke, while Australia's Leisel Jones won gold in the women's 100m breaststroke.
