OHB SE: Major Ariane 6-order from Amazon to launch-service-provider Arianespace

MT Aerospace AG expects good order prospects

Bremen (pta015/06.04.2022/11:20 UTC+2)

Augsburg, 06.04.2022. The U.S. Company Amazon opted for launches with Europe's new large Ariane 6 rocket when setting up its Project Kuiper satellite constellation in space. MT Aerospace AG, a subsidiary of the German space and technology group OHB SE, is one of the largest supplier of components for this launch vehicle program and expects good order prospects from the Ariane 6 Prime contractor ArianeGroup, following Arianespace’s launch contract award.

"The decision to launch the Project Kuiper satellites with Ariane 6 rockets is a real turning point in the history of this new launcher! This decision sets a new course for the European launch vehicle program as a whole as well as for European suppliers such as MT Aerospace ", enthuses Hans Steininger, CEO of MT Aerospace AG. "With 18 Ariane 6 launches ordered over a period of 3 years, our production will significantly rise through a challenging production ramp-up. This is excellent news for our company and the production sites in Augsburg and Bremen."

MT Aerospace AG has a production share of around ten percent in all Ariane 6 rockets, making it one of the largest suppliers to the European launcher. "The components of the tanks and metallic structures of the upper stage and the central stage, the main components of the central stage structure of the Vulcain 2.1 engine as well as the forward and aft structures of the solid boosters come from Augsburg," says Ulrich Scheib, CCO of MT Aerospace AG. "We are proud that Europe's new launch vehicle is chosen for Project Kuiper. As major supplier of Ariane 6, we look forward to contributing to a successful build-up of this ambitious satellite constellation project."

The partners behind Europe's new big rocket

Ariane 6 is a completely new launcher, versatile and evolutive, based on cutting-edge technologies from Europe. It aims to reduce production costs from 40% compared to its successful predecessor Ariane 5, in which MT Aerospace was also involved from the outset. The first flight of Ariane 6 is scheduled for the end of 2022. Ariane 6 is a European Space Agency (ESA) program with contributions from the industry. ArianeGroup is prime contractor and responsible for the development, manufacturing and assembly of the entire launcher. This is done in collaboration with industrial partners from 13 European countries. The Ariane 6 launch service is marketed and operated by ArianeGroup’s subsidiary Arianespace. The French space agency CNES is responsible for the launch site in Kourou.
